Kermit J. T. Callaway was born in Marthasville MO. on 4-AUG-1909. His parents were Samuel Thomas Callaway (1872-1959). His mother was Mabel B. Nelson (1878-1956). He had three brothers; Wendell, Muriel and Celester. He lived in St Charles at 124 North 10th Street in St Charles. He enlisted at Jefferson Barracks on 10-JUL-1942. He was in the 743 MP Battalion. Kermit Callaway died 16-SEP-1942. He was 35 years old. He died
in Junction City Kansas by accident, stabbed to death by another soldier at Ft Riley Kansas. The hospital admission card indicates, “stabbed, not in line of duty, misconduct.”
Kermit Callaway is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
The Military Council convened on 11-JAN 1943. The court determined; “that Private Wille Curtis, Company C, 743 Military Police Battalion (Z-I), did, at Fort Riley, Kansas, on or about September 16th, feloniously, unlawfully, and with premeditation, kill one private First Class J. T. Callaway Jr., Company C, 743rd Military Police Battalion (Z-I), a human being by stabbing him with a knife.” The sentence of Dishonorable Discharge and confinement for life in a Penitentiary was reported on 4-MAY 1943.
