Earl was born in Sikeston, MO.  He joined the Army National Guard at the age of 16 and was honorably discharged.  Then, at age 19, he joined the Marine Corps, serving from 1953-1956.  As he was making his way to Korea on a troop carrier, a ceasefire was declared, so his company was sent to Japan where he served for 14 months in the 3rd Marines Weapons Co.

He is an earnest advocate of the nearby St. Charles Veterans Museum, where he and Mitzi take their walks every morning, checking up on the facility, saluting the flag, and spreading encouragement, kindness, and cheer to all the volunteers and visitors. He is a regular contributor of original, inspirational poetry about veterans.
