On This Day, 13-JAN 1944, We Honor a Fallen Hero
Emmett Bernard Haake was born 7-JAN 1923, He lived at 1523 Waverly St Charles MO. His father was Robert Haake (1880-1940) and mother was Anna W. Oaks Haake (1890-1975) of St. Charles. Emmett had two brothers; Robert and Maurice (Maurice died at age 2) and one sister; Loretta. Emmett attended nearby St. Charles High School. Before entering the Navy, Emmett worked at American Car and Foundry (ACF) in St. Charles. ACF was an important equipment supplier during both world wars.
Emmett enlisted 23-NOV 1942. He was a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class in the Navy and a Naval Construction Battalion on New Britain. Emmitt served on the SS William Rawls and SS Daniel H. Hill two Liberty ships. Emmett also served on the Gunboat USS Surprise.
He was wounded 1-JAN 44 and later died of wounds sustained in combat in the South West Pacific 13-JAN 1944. Emmett was 21. Emmett is buried in St Charles at St Peter Catholic Cemetery.
Emmett is honored and remembered at the St. Charles County Veterans Museum on the Wall of Honor.
