Garrett Hobart Keene
Garrett Hobart Keene was born 28-APR 1897 in Troy MO. His father was James Francis Keene, and his mother was Virginia May Keene. He later lived in St. Charles MO. According to the census, in 1900 he lived in Portage des Sioux. He married Nora Dell Keene.
Garrett Keene entered the service with the U.S. Army 26-SEP 1918. He went on to train with the 164th Depot Brigade at Camp Funston, Kansas, before receiving assignment to Company C, 65th Pioneer Infantry, the latter of which was comprised primarily of African American soldiers from Southern states. His serial number was 497030177. The 65th was stateside when the war ended. Garrett Keene received his discharge on 7-DEC 1918. The 1920 Census list his occupation as “laborer.” His occupation according to the 1940 Census was a “Reamer.”Later, he registered for the World War II (“Old Man’s Draft Registration”) in 1942. He states a his employer as, “American Car and Foundry” in St. Charles on 3rd Street. His occupation according to the 1950 Census, was “laborer and contractor.”
Garrett Keene died on 18-MAY 1974 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Charles.
