Stanford Long was sent overseas in January 1944, and served as a Captain of a B-24 to the Northern Solomon’s, Papua New Guinea, Bismarck-Archipelago and Southern Philippines, and also flew fighters for 3 months.
During this time, he flew 41 combat missions. He had approximately 550 flying hours. For his service he was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars.
