Cyril Obrecht was born on August 3rd 1915 to Henry and Anna Obrecht. He was born and raised in the 2-story house that still stands at the corner of Elm and Sonderen, which is approximately 50 yards from the present Veteran’s Museum. The location where the museum stands now was the family pasture where they kept the family cow and sheep. Cyril was the youngest of 10 children. He quit school in the 7th grade and went to work to help support his family. Cyril was working for the railroad when he enlisted in the US Navy on Sept 9, 1939. He received his Basic Training at Great Lakes Naval Station. Cyril was trained as a ship’s cook.
