I was 17 years old on 14 November 1941 and feeling very grown up and wanting to do my bit to help. We all felt the need to pitch in at that time. Without discussing it with Mother, I volunteered to serve with the WRNS. We learned that we could be accepted at age 17 years, 3 months if our parents gave a signed consent. I was really pretty scared after I had done the deed, because that was the first time I had made a major decision without telling my parents. I managed to get my mother to sign my papers and left her to tell father that he now had a “Naval Daughter”.
