Ray L. Sternke
Ray L. Sternke was born 11-MAY 1896 in Brookfield, Missouri. His father was Charles Ferdinand Sternke (1867–1955) and his mother was Lottie Lee Libby (1870-1945). Ray had one older sister; Pearl. In 1910, at the age of 13, Ray lived on Peck Street in Brookfield with his parents.
When Ray registered for the draft in 1917, he listed his occupation as “mechanic”. Ray enlisted 18-SEP 1917 and served as a Sergeant in Company 18th 1st A.S.M. Reg Inf 77th Aviation Regiment in World War I. He left for France from Hoboken NJ on 9-FEB 1918 on ship Number 36. He was listed as a Sergeant First Class with Company 18, First Motor Mechanics Regiment, Signal Corps.
