Sylvester Young
Sylvester Young was born 12-JAN 1891 in St. Charles MO. His father was Ulysses and Maggie Young. He had two siblings. He lived in St. Charles on Benton. In 1910 he listed his occupation as “shoe shiner at hotel.” When he registered for the draft, he listed his occupation as “waiter.” He entered the service in New York on 31 Oct 1917 from New York. He served overseas from 15-JUN 1918 to 31-MAR 1919. He departed Brest, France on the troopship Maui, on 8-MAR 1919 and arrived in Hoboken NJ on 31 MAR 1919. His unit was listed as Le Mans Casual Company Number 1228 Illinois (Colored). Le Mans is where troops were gathered for the return voyage home. A casual company is formed out. of men who have wounded or recently discharged from a sick bed in a. hospital.
After leaving the service, Sylvester returned to St. Charles. Sometime later he moved to New York. When he registered for the World War II (“Old Man’s Draft) in 1942 in New York, he states as an occupation, “out of work.” His next of kin is listed as Polonia Young. In 1950 the Federal census has Sylvester in New York, and his occupation is listed as “a store operator, smoke shop.” Sylvester Young died in 16-OCT 1967 and is buried in Forest Lawn in Buffalo NY.
